Visual Design Intern
New York City

We are looking for a enterprising design student to join our New York office as a digital design intern. Our studio predominantly focuses on digital interfaces and immersive experiential media driven projects. We do a large amount of exhibition design work, having recently opened projects such as the Take A Stand Center at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, the Haggin Museum of Art, the Mississippi Grammy Museum and the Witte Museum of Natural History.

As design intern you are an excited designer, open to learning and creative dialogue with the ability to work collaboratively in a fluid studio environment. The internship will primarily be composed of time working with our visual design team, however, there will be overlap with other teams in the office in order to get a sense of our overall process.

Qualified candidates should have:
-A strong visual background with great sensitivity to typography and robust graphic design skills
-An understanding of and interest in interaction design
-Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite programs
-Motion and animation skills are a plus
-Working knowledge of Sketch, prototyping tools such as Invision, Framer is a plus

AV Systems Designer
New York City

Gallagher & Associates is looking for a diversely talented AV Systems Designer to join our team who will be responsible for overseeing AV systems for media exhibit design from ideation to launch. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the exhibit and architectural design processes and requirements, and be able to cogently communicate to designers, architects, lighting designers, fabricators, and clients. The AV systems designer will work with the design teams to develop a fully-biddable AV hardware package throughout a phased design approach, participate in the bid negotiation phase, review shop drawings, and participate in shop and site visits.

The AV Systems Designer will report to the Technical Director and Senior Exhibit Designer, but will be working in a dynamic environment where projects develop in a collaboration with a variety of departments including physical design and interactive software development (media team).

Responsibilities include; design complete AV hardware systems including audio, visual, and show control components, create AV hardware system diagrams based on and media and exhibit design, act as primary reviewer of shop drawings and site installation, manage AV systems for multiple small to large scale projects, as needed, work with tech team to troubleshoot hardware selections. The ideal candidate will be able to creatively solve problems and achieve design intent by offering innovative hardware solutions. Candidate must be capable of the following deliverables at various phases of a project: Review exhibit design and communicate with teams for AV requirements to meet design intent. Produce Iterative AV hardware system design packages including: equipment specifications, system controls & integration, ROM and line-item cost estimating for equipment and installation, single-lines and rack drawings, equipment location and architectural requirements plans (power/data locations) projection studies, equipment heat loads and power assessment, and risk identification and mitigation plans. Participate in all phases of the design and installation process, partake in prototyping of AV setups to confirm feasibility and facilitate mockups, AV Integrator shop visits to assess operability of complex systems, partake in client meetings, and turn client and internal feedback into well documented AV system changes, coordinate with software developers to confirm system requirements are met with chosen AV equipment, review installations and ensure AV Integrators are following, intended design choices, and provide on-site installation support and troubleshooting when needed.

Qualifications include; 7+ years experience designing AV systems, 3+ years overseeing AV system installations, including feet on the ground troubleshooting experience, experience creating bid ready AV packages on small to large scale projects, expertise in all AV system components, including speakers, projectors, touch screens, computer systems, audio and video playback systems, automation systems, show control systems, networking, remote management equipment, etc., ability to reason around experimental sensors and equipment configurations, experience working with hardware for complex, software driven digital interactives, and knowledge of and experience with architectural and exhibit design processes.

Lead Visual Designer

We are looking for a dynamic Lead Visual Designer to join our New York-based digital team in the creation of interactive experiences for renowned museums, corporations, universities and governmental organizations. You will direct and work collaboratively with internal design teams to create inspiring work. You should be a design innovator who gets excited about making delightful interfaces for humans.

As a co-Lead of the Visual Design Department, you are an inspiring hands-on designer, art director, team mentor, and an expert communicator of a project’s creative vision, internally and with our clients.

Responsibilities include; directing internal design teams towards cutting edge visual experiences, collaborating and communicating productively with Producers, Content Strategists, User Experience Designers, Software Developers, and Exhibit design teams, explaining design choices to cross-functional teams, clients and curatorial teams, expressing concepts both verbally and visually, pushing creativity, challenge established thinking, and discover new ways of approaching interactive and linear media storytelling, iterating on design based on findings and tech constraints. Helping to refine and further develop concepts into complete, functional design systems, multi-tasking in a very fast-paced team environment, applying the best design aesthetics and manage the quality of design throughout all phases of a project, and under tight deadlines, being accountable for project deliverables in presentations, client meetings, and new business pitches, participating constructively in inter-department communications, being accountable for project scope, budget and schedule through all phases, from kick-off through delivery, having the ability to travel nationwide for client meetings at key phases of a project, and attending and taking part in talks and conventions.

Qualifications include; minimum 7-10+ years demonstrable experience in creating visual interfaces, large scale websites and/or applications for physical interactive installations, mobile or touch devices, must be process driven, demonstrate strong visual design skills, careful attention to detail, and have a solid understanding of user-centered design principles, an understanding of iterative prototyping as an essential part of the design process, fluency with common design software (Sketch app, Illustrator, Photoshop, Keynote). After Effects, 3D software, basic coding knowledge is a plus. Eloquent verbal/written communication & presentation skills, with the ability to successfully explain your design rationale to your team and stakeholders, high comfort level in working within a self-directed culture. Effective time management skills to balance project schedule with fast-paced deadlines and solid formal academic background in Graphic Design, Digital Media Design, Communication Design, or related field; advanced degree.
