Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Graphic Designer, you will create engaging graphic elements for national and international visitor experiences and museum exhibitions, leading your project’s conceptual vision. Working closely with design directors and project leads to address and resolve design challenges and maintain visual integrity throughout project implementation.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to translate complex information into project vision and accessible visual communication
- Teams include Content Developers, 3D Exhibit Designers, Graphic, UX, and Motion Designers, Creative Technologists, Film Directors, Producers, Coordinators, and external partners; exhibit fabricators, lighting designers, media integrators, and other specialists.
- Participate in or lead internal team brainstorms and prepare and contribute creative ideation. As a leader, make space for your team members, encouraging participation and collaboration
- Visitor Experience: Design with the visitor in mind. In all design decisions, consider the visitor experience and flow, working together with the team and UX designer. Ensure designs follow accessibility guidelines
- Project Budget and Deliverables: Consult with project leadership (Producer and Creative Director) regarding schedule, milestone deliverables, budget, and any unique client needs to ensure work fits within defined guidelines
- Client Relationship: Listen to client feedback and ensure client needs are reflected in proposed design solutions
- Presentation: Present, lead, or attend internal meetings or client meetings, check-ins, or workshops. Come prepared with discussion points or materials, ready to explain approach, solutions, and options. Availability to travel for client meetings.
- Resource Utilization: Lead the graphic utilization of various project materials (scripts, artifacts, historic and contemporary images, numbering and tracking systems) to inform graphics and visual intent
- Design Strategy: Design and implement the visual design strategy for your projects from concept to implementation.
- In early phases of work, create color palettes, research and propose materials, create visual identities and systems, specify typography and typographic systems, etc. In later stages of work, create graphic elevations that align with the established project vision and consider content, visitor experience, and physical space. All of which to be coordinated with your team members in each capability (content, 3D, media, UX, etc).
- Create and implement the visual approach for presentation materials and client meetings, creating unique designs that are aligned with the visual design vision for the project.
- Leadership and Creative Direction: Lead small teams of Graphic Designers on your projects
- Regularly communicate with Graphic Designers, allocating and reviewing assignments, and providing positive and constructive feedback with the project vision in mind.
- Ensure the graphic designers on your projects contribute to visually compelling presentations and deliverables that are organized, on time, aligned with all teams work (content, 3D, coordination, UX, media, etc), the project vision.
- Team Mentorship: Senior Graphic Designers are expected to lead with a mentorship mindset, assigning tasks that allow team members to learn and grow, taking time to thoughtfully review work, communicating regularly, and answer ongoing questions. May assist with recruitment, hiring, and training
- Fabrication Knowledge: Partner with fabrication specialists to ensure successful implementation of graphic design elements. Design with production techniques in mind, mentoring team members on material use and graphic specifications.
- Graphic Production: Lead a production team during the Final Design Artwork phase (FDA)
- Work closely with the team coordinator to number all graphic materials and ensure graphic specifications are accurate and align with the fabrication expectations and budget.
- Coordinate with the fabricator on sample review, production methods, and FDA timeline considering shop drawing, site preparation, and fabrication schedules
- Assign work to production designers to create hundreds of high quality graphic files for production across many materials considering use of high quality, durable, and beautiful fabrication methods
- Fabrication and Installation Review: Designers will travel for in-person reviews to fabricator or to the project site, conducting on-site sample review, mock-ups, installation feedback and evaluation of completed graphics, ensuring design excellence as well as client satisfaction
- Organization: Oversee maintenance and organization of digital asset libraries and project files
- Industry Trends: Stay current with design trends, production techniques, sustainability practices, and industry best practices
Qualifications – Required
- Education: B.A or M.A in Graphic Design, Environmental Design, or related field
- Experience: 5+ years experience in experiential design or related field
- Your Design Portfolio Demonstrates:
- Creative thinking, designs that convey emotion
- Strong skills manipulating graphics through Adobe Creative Suite apps, most frequently: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
- Excellent typography skills and attention to detail
- Excellent use of color theory, composition, and visual hierarchy
- Design and implementation of impactful experiential design through multiple phases of design from Concept to Design Development to fabrication oversight
- Ability to work with 3D team members to create collaborative spatial designs
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles
- Knowledge and experience with fabrication techniques and both typical and unique graphic production methods for exhibit design
- On the Job Skills:
- Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects, excellent organizational skills
- Proactive communicator, excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Collaborative mindset and willingness to receive feedback
Qualifications – Preferred (Not Required)
- Google Suite: Experience with google suite is a plus; slides, sheets, and docs
- Production & Fabrication: Understanding of material applications and fabrication methods. Knowledge of print production processes and file preparation
- Additional Design Toolkit:
- Experience designing identity and branding
- Experience with outdoor or wayfinding design
- 3D or motion software knowledge (After Effects, Figma, Google Sketch-Up, Vectorworks, Blender, etc)
- Photography or illustration skills
