JOB DESCRIPTION
The ideal candidate for this role will be both technical and creative. They will have knowledge of the exhibit and architectural design processes and requirements, and be able to deftly communicate with designers, architects, lighting designers, fabricators, and clients. The AV Systems Designer will work with Senior AV Systems Designers and design teams to provide options which enable novel methods of sensing input and digital output, as well as provide feasibility consultation and risk mitigation. They will develop a fully-biddable AV hardware package through a phased design approach, participate in the bid negotiation phase, review shop drawings, participate in fabrication shop and site visits, and oversee the final AV commissioning of a project.
The AV Systems Designer will work collaboratively with internal design and technology teams, consultants, and with clients from renowned museums, corporations, universities and governmental organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- The ideal candidate will offer innovative AV hardware solutions and creatively solve problems as part of an iterative design process in order to execute and express the design intent of their team
- Design complete AV hardware systems including experiential technologies: audio, visual, sensing, computing, and show control components
- Review shop drawings from Fabricators and AV Integrators to ensure they conform to our design intent
- Work with Creative Technologists to identify potential AV solutions and facilitate research and testing to finalize hardware specifications
- Review exhibit design drawings, and communicate with exhibit designers to ensure they understand AV hardware requirements and how to integrate AV hardware into their exhibits
- Provide exhibit designers with drawings and cut sheets to help them understand AV hardware requirements and how to integrate AV equipment into exhibits
- Assist in communicating infrastructure requirements to architects, including the need for power, data, heat mitigation and physical installation of equipment into architecture
- Identify shared components of building infrastructure and IT systems to liaise with client-side IT teams and consultants
- Assist with the creation of internal Tech/design team prototypes to validate AV components and AV integration techniques
- Participate in AV Integrator shop visits to assess operability of complex systems and AV integration techniques
- Attend client meetings, and synthesize client and internal feedback into well documented AV system design changes
- Coordinate with software developers to confirm that specified AV equipment meets or exceeds software requirements and benchmarks
- Review installations and ensure AV Integrators are following intended design choices
- Provide on-site installation support and troubleshooting when needed
- Candidate will be responsible for these AV hardware system design package deliverables at various phases of a project:
- Equipment specifications
- System controls & integration
- ROM and line-item cost estimating for equipment and installation
- Single-lines and rack drawings
- Equipment location and architectural requirements plans (power/data locations)
- Projection studies
- Equipment heat loads and power assessment
- Risk identification and mitigation plans
- Recommended maintenance protocols and longevity assessments
Qualifications
- 4+ years experience designing AV systems
- 1+ year overseeing AV system installations, including feet on the ground troubleshooting experience
- 2+ years experience working in Vectorworks or other 3D drawing software with multiple designers
- Experience assisting with or creating bid-ready AV packages on small to large scale projects
- Expertise in all AV system components, including speakers, projectors and lenses, displays and touch displays of various types and formats, computer systems, audio and video playback systems, automation systems, show control systems, networking, remote management equipment, etc.
- Ability to reason around experimental sensors and equipment configurations
- Experience working with hardware for complex, software driven digital interactives
- Knowledge of and experience with architectural and exhibit design processes

Occasional travel to company sites may be required for team meetings, training sessions, or special projects. However, such travel will be planned well in advance, and expenses will be covered by the company.
